Health and Safety Specialist
PURPOSE and SCOPE
Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for providing support on day-to-day Health and Safety issues, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, continual improvements to the Safety Management System, and promoting a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The following are the main job responsibilities and priorities for this position:
- Ensure compliance to federal/provincial health & safety legislation/regulations, applicable codes, standards and guidelines by providing recommendations, interpretation and guidance.
- Provide day-to-day support to operations for all safety related issues and concerns.
- Conduct job hazard/safety analysis, risk assessments and ergonomic reviews to develop related documentation such as safe work procedures.
- Develop and maintain site specific emergency response plans, safety programs, forms, and policies.
- Support the continual improvement and maintenance of our SAFE Work Certified Management System.
- Support and occasionally lead incident investigations, documentation of incidents, and corrective actions.
- Conduct/assist with regular safety audits and inspections (compliance, program specific, and management system audits).
- Developing communications to all stakeholders on safety related information, such as Safety Talks.
- Provide direct support for the Joint Safety and Health Committee(s) and its members.
- Review, update, and ensure safety related training material meets legislation/regulations, standards, and company policies.
- Assist with safety orientation of employees, visitors, and contractors and other safety-related training including Respirator Fit Tests and WHMIS.
- Promote a proactive Safety Culture for all employees.
- Provide support to the Disability Management team.
- Liaise with government officials and authorities, when required.
- Provide administrative support to MacDon safety team, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Graduate of an Occupational Health and Safety Program or other post-secondary education in Health and Safety.
- Professional Health and Safety designation (CRSP/CRST or equivalent) is preferred.
- Experience with SAFE Work Certification and safety management systems.
- Three (3) years of experience in a Health & Safety role in a Manufacturing environment is preferred.
- First Aid/CPR Certification is an asset.
- Training and/or Industry Specific Certifications in Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, Laser Safety, or other relevant safety-related topics is an asset.

- Ability to work in a dynamic manufacturing team environment, as well as independently.

- Exceptional communication skills with all levels of stakeholders.Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to coordinate, interpret and publish safety related data and information.
- Proficient with Microsoft Products (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.) as well as EHS Software.
